Get connected at ONA, beyond

By Stacy Gimbel
ONA Convention Online Staff

Wondering where to log on in New York this week? Wireless access is readily available for ONA conference-goers in and around the Hilton New York hotel.

Within the conference areas, ONA members can connect wirelessly using the login code provided in their programs (pages 8 and 51).

Within the Hilton, ONA members can connect to the Internet in three locations. According to Charmaine Hassell, a telephone operator at the Hilton, guests may wirelessly connect in their rooms by following the instructions that appear on-screen when they fire up a web browser. Access costs $9.95 for 24 hours, but should not appear on your hotel bills, according to Anthony Moor, the conference chair.

In the public areas of the Hilton — the main lobby and lobby areas of the second and third floors — wireless is available for $2.95 for the first 15 minutes, 25 cents for each additional minute.

Conference-goers may also connect in the hotel's business center on the second floor at $10 for every 15 minutes. Hassell said wireless is not available in the meeting rooms unless it’s been ordered by the organization.

Beyond the hotel, a quick search of the Wi-fi Hotspot List brings up 140 locations within a mile of the Hilton.

Those thirsty for lattes with their broadband can visit the Starbucks right across the street from the hotel on 53rd St. and Sixth Ave. For about 10 bucks, you can purchase a day pass to have unlimited access via T-Mobile. The location's hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A few blocks further, on 54th Street and Broadway, 24-hour access is available at Kinko's. Users connect through a T-Mobile account, similar to the Starbucks locations.

Less than a block from the Hilton, on 54th St. and 7th Ave., customers of the Faces and Names restaurant and tavern can use a wireless connection for free. Faces and Names is open 11 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar also offers free wireless to customers in their second floor dining room. Applebee's, at 50th St. and Broadway, is open 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
