2006 Online Journalism Awards - Rules

REVISED RULES

(Enter the Online Journalism awards by submitting an entry here.)

Please note: The contest will close on June 15, 2006. There will be no extensions.

In response to the growth and development of online news since the award's inception in 2000, the Online News Association this year has made several changes in the competition's rules and categories. As you prepare your entries for submission, please note that:

* The ONA has size divisions for several categories. Under the rules, you may enter your site in one of three divisions for the General Excellence and Online Commentary categories:

o Large (more than 1,000,000 unique visitors per month to all of the entering company's or individual's sites -- not just the site being submitted)

o Medium (100,000-999,999 unique visitors per month to all of the entering company's or individual's sites)

o Small (less than 100,000 unique visitors per month to all of the entering company's or individual's sites)

o If there are two or fewer entries in a given category, the judges reserve the right to combine the entries with those of the next category.

In 2006, there will be nine categories, but with three changes:

1) In previous years there have been two student awards, one for individual work, and one for best site. This year there is only one student award, which will honor excellence in digital journalism by a student or team reporting on a single story or issue. The work must have appeared originally in a student- or school-based Web site and have been created by full-time student(s) (at the time of publication). Unpublished entries do not qualify.

2. The Enterprise Journalism category is now know as Investigative Journalism.

3. There is a new category, the Knight Public Service Awards, that includes a $5000 prize. There is only one award.

Please note: The Contest will close on June 15, 2006. There will be no extensions.

* Entry fees for large sites only have changed this year. Entrants from Large institutions (whose combined Web sites attract 1,000,000 or more uniques) will pay a fee of $150 per entry. Entrants from Medium institutions (whose combined Web sites attract 100,000-999,000 uniques) will pay $100 per entry. Entrants in the Small category will pay $50.

* For individuals not representing a media institution, there is a $25 discount if you are an ONA member. There are exceptions to this general rule and entrants should check the rules for each category carefully.

* Judges will be invited to place special emphasis on entries that are original to the Web. Entries that were first published in another medium are still eligible for entry (except for the Online Commentary category), but emphasis will be placed on entries that demonstrate mastery of the special characteristics of the Web.

The 2006 Online News Association Conference is the premier conference for those who work in, or have an interest in, online media and news. The Online Journalism Awards Banquet honors the very best online journalism produced in the past year.

The Online Journalism Awards have become the top awards in online journalism. Each year a distinguished panel of judges selects the very best work in nine different categories to be honored at the awards. The OJA Banquet is the event where the awards are presented, and the winners are honored for their efforts.
