ONA 2006 Conference Workshops

The ONA is will conduct a series of special workshops prior to the 2006 ONA Conference. The workshops will be held on Oct. 5, while the ONA Conference and Awards Banquet will be held on Oct. 6-7.

(Please note that three of the four following workshops will be held Oct. 5, at the Capitol Hilton in Washington DC, site of the 2006 ONA Conference.)

  • "Crafting multimedia content: A hands-on ONA workshop" (8:00 a.m-5:00 p.m.) is an ONA-sponsored workshop.

    Tight editing and sophisticated presentation are the focus of this day-long multimedia workshop. Stan Heist, the NPPA television photographer of the year, will show how he begins the editing process in the field as he creates tightly crafted natural sound-driven stories. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of their video or audio slide show work for Stan's editing critique.

    Cost is $125 for ONA members, and $175 for non-ONA members. Lunch will be provided. Workshop attendence is limited to 20.

  • Citizens Media Summit II is a one-day, J-Lab workshop (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. ) held in conjunction with the ONA.

    Citizen Media Ventures: How are they being launched? Who’s writing for them? Are they making enough money to survive? Are they journalism or social networks? Hear from the hands-on pioneers blazing new trails in the growing field of user-generated content.

    Cost is $150. ONA members pay $140.

  • Going Digital: How to prepare your newsroom for the digital future: An ASNE-ONA Seminar is a special workshop for top print and online editors.

    Top newspaper editors and their online counterparts will assemble for a daylong workshop on how to handle the convergent present and prepare for a unified future.

    The morning session will provide big-picture perspectives, centering on who your true competitors are and how to produce a more integrated operation. The afternoon, focusing on practicalities, will showcase hands-on examples of what it takes to work in a converged digital world.

    The tentative list of session leaders includes representatives of USA TODAY, Yahoo, Delaware News Journal, Roanoke Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly and Orlando Sentinel. The program is limited to 50 people from ASNE-member papers.

    Must work for an ASNE-member paper or its website to register.

    Cost: $150 per person. Participants may register for the ONA conference and awards ceremony at a discounted rate of $349.

  • Classroom Convergence: The future is here, now what?

    American University and USA TODAY invite you to a free day of programs designed to help educators bring converged and online media into curriculum and research. Day includes a visit to USA TODAY's converged newsroom, a close-up look at American's online production and an evening reception and program: "The future is here, now what."
