ONA Workshop, Reception at UNITY Conference

The ONA will conduct a session Friday, July 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m (Please note this is a time change) at the UNITY conference in Chicago.: "Your Digital Toolbox: Adapting Technology for Journalism." It will be led by Katharine Fong, an ONA Board member and deputy managing editor at the San Jose Mercury News and Amy Webb, 2008 ONA Conference Chair and principal consultant at Webbmedia Group. The session is being held in the digital demo area of the career fair/media expo

Here's how Katherine described the session::

The media landscape has changed. Distribution of content is no longer a guarantee. More and more, audiences engage in "feedthink" and not "packagethink"; content, therefore, is more important than presentation.

This means we must
own our content everywhere, and aggregate relevant content from elsewhere onto our sites. We need to take advantage of existing distribution channels to get our content out there and to improve how we cover news and our beats, including:

- Email
- RSS
- Blogs
- Widgets
- Microblogs
- Social networks
- Semantic web
- Contextualization

Meanwhile, the ONA is hosting a reception on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the famous Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago, in association with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The tavern is near Tribune Towers and Wrigley Building at 430 N. Michigan Ave at Lower Level Phone: 312-222-1525. If you're in Chicago at the conference, please drop by.

If you have any questions on either event, please Tom Regan, ONA executive director, at
director@journalists.org.
